Blkbrd Mantis Rig

Overview

The Mantis is a modular elastic-based camera support system designed to provide adjustable lift, improved stabilization, and operator control. It supports single or dual-head configurations and integrates with multiple rigging systems.

Load Capacity

  • Maximum load per Mantis head: 38 lbs (17.2 kg)
  • Dual Mantis configuration: Doubles lifting capacity
  • Example:
    • 2× Heavy bands = up to 76 lbs (34.4 kg) combined lift

Elastic Band Ratings (Per Band)

  • Extra Heavy: 38 – 42 lbs (17.2 – 19 kg)
  • Heavy: 28 – 38 lbs (12.7 – 17.2 kg)
  • Medium: 15 – 30 lbs (8.6 – 13.6 kg)
  • Light: 10 – 18 lbs (4.5 – 8.2 kg)
  • Extra Light: 5 – 12 lbs (3.8 – 6.8 kg)

Note: Performance is optimized when camera weight sits near the middle of the selected band range.

System Configurations

Single vs Dual Mantis

  • Single Unit: Full load handled by one system
  • Dual Units:
    • Splits payload between two lines
    • Increases stability and lifting power
    • Allows use of lighter bands per side

Elastic Tube Configurations

  • Dual Tube:
    • Elastic length: 5’5” (standard)
  • Quad Tube:
    • Elastic length: 7’10”
  • Dual Tube (Slingshot):
    • Elastic length: 6’

Mounting Compatibility

Supported Systems

  • Ready Rig (direct mount via ¼”-20 screws)
  • Easyrig (adapter required, includes Minimax compatibility)
  • Speedrail / Scaffold (1¼” & 1½” support)
  • Walter Klassen Slingshot

Mounting Notes

  • Dual-head setups may require a wide bracket in high mode
  • Mounting pins and adapters included depending on configuration
  • No modification required for Easyrig installation

Camera Connection Options

Maglock Hook System

  • Auto-locking hook mechanism
  • Compatible with:
    • Universal hook adapter
    • Plastic spuds (camera-mounted)

Easyrig Quick Release

  • Retrofit aluminum cap system
  • Uses existing Easyrig hardware
  • Ball socket connection for flexible movement

Tensioning System

Mechanism

  • Self-locking retention arm using friction + elastic compression
  • One-handed operation
  • No need to adjust tensioning arm directly

Adjustment Process

  • Pull elastic downward to increase tension
  • Bring line inward to lock
  • Release by controlled reverse motion

Recommended Lift Ratio

  • 90% system lift / 10% operator control for optimal handling

Performance Characteristics

  • Smooth vertical “boom” range
  • Adjustable float height (recommended: waist level)
  • Scalable lift based on band selection and configuration
  • Consistent tension locking with audible feedback in some setups

Environmental Resistance

  • Safe for use in:
    • Natural rain
    • Artificial rain (film FX environments)

Elastic Construction & Care

  • Fluid-filled elastic core (do not cut or trim)
  • Oil-sensitive surface (keep free of contaminants)

Maintenance

  • Inspect before each use
  • Replace if:
    • Cracking
    • Tearing
    • Cuts or deformation

Care Schedule

  • Apply 303 Aerospace Protectant every 6–8 weeks
  • Wipe dry after application

Safety Guidelines

  • Do not exceed rated load per head
  • Do not apply bending force to the system
  • Only mount via designated barrel connector
  • Always maintain control of elastic during adjustment
  • Never allow bands to snap freely
  • Do not leave system under tension when not in use

Modularity & Reconfiguration

Convertible System

  • Quad → Dual conversion supported
  • Dual units can be combined into Quad configuration

Component Sharing

  • Interchangeable rollers, tubes, and elastics
  • Expandable via additional return rollers

Included / Optional Accessories

  • Elastic storage clips (with reduction plates)
  • Easyrig quick-release retrofit kit
  • Speedrail adapter with reduction collar
  • Plastic spuds (camera mounting points)
  • Maglock hook system
